How to investigate a country you don't have access to
Saturday October 26, 2024 9:30am - 10:30am CEST
Dozens of foreign workers at Amazon warehouses in Saudi Arabia told how they were deceived, exploited and trapped to take work in the country. Amazon later had to pay $1.9 million USD to more than 700 contract migrant workers to address claims they were exposed to exploitative labor conditions.
Andrew Lehren and Hoda Osman were among the team that broke the story. Most of the investigation happened from abroad, because of security risks for any investigative reporter going to Saudi Arabia.
Lehren and Osman have also reported together on the fate of Palestinians living in Gaza during Israel’s recent bombardment.
In this session they will share tips, tricks and techniques to find sources and information from parts of the world where you as reporters are denied access.

How E24, OCCRP and 70 other media outlets unlocked Dubai
Saturday October 26, 2024 3:15pm - 4:15pm CEST
On May 14, more than 70 media outlets around the world published the Dubai Unlocked project, an international investigation into the owners of real estate in Dubai. Based on leaked property records from 2020 and 2022, it’s the first project of its kind to look at ownership in the Emirate on a global scale, identifying scores of property owners we believe it is in the public interest to write about. Cleaning, disseminating and verifying the data was a massive lift! In this session we will explain how we got the data in shape and managed the workflow for such a large international collaboration.

E24 co-lead the project together with OCCRP, and Eiliv Frich Flydal will tell you how everything started and how and why Dubai should be on your radar. Karina and Eric will tell you how they worked on millions on rows of difficult data, matched it with new sources and made it available to reporters around the globe.

Data journalism from the war
Saturday October 26, 2024 4:30pm - 5:30pm CEST
Independent Ukrainian news website Texty.org.ua has specialised in making data journalism stories from the ongoing war in the country. Meet editor in chief Roman Kulchynsky, NLP specialist Nataliia Romanyshyn and datajournalist Yevheniia Drozdova.
