Despite the increasing use of algorithms for risk assessment, journalists have struggled to gain access to and test these systems. Last year, for the first time, a team of journalists managed to access the source code, machine learning model file, and training data of a machine learning algorithm for welfare fraud used in the Dutch city of Rotterdam. This hands-on workshop will allow participants to work directly with the Rotterdam algorithm and the training data to learn how to develop and test hypotheses about risk assessment algorithms.

This session is suitable for developers and investigative reporters.
