The Kyiv Independent's investigation
Uprooted focused on the massive deportations of Ukrainian children to Russia. The project won the prestigious IRE gold medal this summer. War crimes investigators Olesia Bida and Danylo Mokryk will discuss the methods and tools they employed to identify abducted children and the challenges the team of journalists faced.
For example, traditional facial recognition programs often struggle to identify minors, so alternative approaches had to be explored. In addition to these tools, the speakers will also address ethical considerations, such as interviewing children and the permissible circumstances under which journalists can communicate with teenagers on social media without parental consent, particularly in extreme cases like deportation. Ensuring the safety and well-being of the children will be a key focus.
